France's War On Terror in Mali

By May 2021, the French military had been in Mali for more than eight years as part of Operation Barkhane, a mission to fight against Islamic extremism in the Sahel. But instead of getting rid of the terrorist threat in the north, violence simply bled into the other parts of the country. That’s because a slew of problems— neglect by a weakened state and intercommunal violence brought on by a brutal fight for limited resources— couldn’t be solved by foreign military might alone. As the French Army wrapped up its mission in the region, we examined the conditions that made the fight so complex.

In a last ditch effort to leave a mark on foreign policy before his ouster, President Trump, in his first term, announced a drawdown of US troops in global hotspots around the world, including around 700 in Somalia. With no soldiers on the ground the plan promised to provide support through an already controversial and secretive drone program–which watchdog groups say has killed exponentially more civilians than the US admits.
